Who actually decides what we see online – and what we don't?

It used to be enough to look at the major broadcasters to understand who holds media power. Today, algorithms, platform rules, data brokers, bots and influencers shape public opinion – through countless small decisions made behind the scenes.

This is exactly where STEAM comes in: the Socio-Technical Ecosystem Architecture Method. An interdisciplinary team from computer science, law and ethics makes visible how data flows, how recommendation algorithms work, and whose interests are ultimately served.

For the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut and the Department of Informatics at the University of Hamburg, we got to translate this complex research topic into an explainer film – clear, charming and animated right to the point.
